Tall Tales

A Tall Tale is a story that might have some truth to it, but the story has been exaggerated to make it more interesting. Think of a tall tale that you have read.

What was the name of the tall tale? What in the tall tale could have been true? What was the part that was exaggerated?

Use a "quote" from the story to support your response.

The tall tale I read is called, Paul Bunyan. This story is about a baby that was over 100 pounds at birth. The part in this story that could be true is that a baby was born in the state of Maine. The exaggerated part in this tale is that the baby had a beard, was over over 100 pounds at birth, grew to be ten feet tall, and weighed way over 500 pounds, which made earthquakes. A quote from page 109 is, “When he was only two weeks old, he weighed more than 100 pounds, and for breakfast every morning he ate five dozen eggs, ten stacks of potatoes, and a half barrel of mush made from a whole sack of cornmeal.”

The name of the exaggerated part is John Henry Races the Steam Drill is when he was racing the steam the people said stop and they said he swung it so fast they said his maul was on fire. Here’s an example from page 118 ‘’Polly Ann hammer caught fire the whole big bend tunnel glowed with the blue flame of John Henry’s hammer.

A part that couldn’t be true is that he had a beard and was 100 lbs when he was a baby. Here’s a quote from page 112. “ Your just to big” his mother said.

John Henry is the story that I like. The part that I think is true is when the narrator says he was seven feet tall.The exxagerating part is when they say when he hits the wall with the 20 pound hammer and it catches fire and fire gos through the tunnel. Here is a quote from the story"A man ain't nothin' but a man.

I am going to be talking about the story John Henry races the steam drill. Some parts were not exaggerating like some man loves his wife and when he dies he gives her all his money. Some parts were exaggerating parts like the hammer caught on fire and glowed in the tunnel. Here’s a quote from the story “Give the money to Polly Ann. And you bury me in the new suit of clothes”.

The name of the tall tail I have read is Sally Ann thunder Ann wirlwind. One thing that is true in this story that could be true is that Davy could have been going to Sally's house to ask for her marrage. One thing that was exagerated was that when Davy was looking for Sally his yelling caused wind and for trees to shake."When he got three miles away he hollered her name and she heard him and ran to him."

Jhon Henry is one of my favorite Tall Tales it is real because he is 6 feet tall. He could carry a 9 pound hammer. After a man visit him he has to beat the steam driller or he loses his job. Then the cometion was over he won by five feet. After he died he gave 100 dollars to Polly Ann. Here is a qouit from the story. "This old hammer {Bam!}

Rings like silver {Bam!}

Shines like gold, boys, {Bam!}

Shines like gold. {Bam1!}

i chose the story paul bunyan. lumberjacks realy live in the woods. it is impossible for a baby to weigh 300 lbs. at birth.

"when he was a baby he ate 5 dozen eggs, 10 sack of potates, and a half barrel of mush for breakfast."

Here is a book that ALL of you have read (or well anyone in the class),John Henry Races The Steam drill. Now people could consider this more realistic fictionall more that a tall tale but think about this. A man who can beat a steam drill with a manmade tool. That is something NO normal man could do. MAYBE someone could but that would be like 1/20000000000 people. Here is another example on page 118 witch is also something that actually isnt even possible. "John henry swung his 20 pound hammer and drove that steel. He swung and drove faster and Harder, and faster and harder, untill that polly ann hammer actually caught fire. The whole big bend tunnel glowed with the blue flame of john henry's hammer". That is really the only thing that isnt possible in this story. That couldnt happen because a hamer is made of steel. And steel cant catch fire. Maybe the handle of the hammer caught fire? well if that happened he would have caught fire or dropped it.

A tall tale that I have read is Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind. A part in the story selection that could have been true is at the end were a man named Davy Crockett asks Sally Ann to marry him. Another part in the story that was exaggerated is when Sally pulled out a toothpick and with a single swing sent the alligator’s head flying fifty feet. Here’s a quote from Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind when Davy Crockett runs to Sally Ann and says “Sally darling my heart’s bustin!” want to be my wife?

Here is a quote from the story. “I beat the steam, but I broke inside”.

Paul Bunyan is a tall tale I have read. The part that could've been true is how he invented logging. A part that was exaggerated was when they froze their words. here is a quote from page 113, "And, Boss, when I give orders to the woods crew, all my words freeze in the air and hang there stiff as icicles."

The tall tale I have read is John Henry Races the Steam Drill. The part in the story that could have real was that John Henry 200 pounds of rippling muscle. The exaggerated part could have been when John's hammer caught fire. Here is an example to support my answer The whole Big Bend Tunnel glowed with the blue flame of John Henry's hammer.

The tall tale I chose was John Henry. In the tall tale, John Henry races the steam drill, one thing that could be real is him being 6 feet and 200 pounds of rippling muscle. One exaggeration is that he was hitting the hammer so hard that it caught on fire, even though he is strong that is impossible. One quote from the story to support my answer is, “Just go to town and buy me a twenty pound hammer. This 9 pound maul is feeling light.” That proves that he is strong and most people would get tired after a couple hits with a 9 pound hammer, I probably couldn’t even swing a 20 pound hammer.
